The agenda for each workshop are as follows:

September 8th  — SESSIONS ARE FULL

Morning (8:30am-noon): Introduction to FLL, LEGO Mindstorms, and Robot Construction
This session will provide an overview of the 2016 FIRST LEGO League (FLL) competition and hands-on training in building a robot using the LEGO Mindstorms EV3 construction set. We will introduce common LEGO EV3 elements, illustrate basic robot design and building principles, and culminate with assembling and testing a prototype competition robot.

Afternoon (1pm-4pm): Beginning FLL Programming
This session will introduce the Mindstorms EV3 software used to program robots for FLL competitions. The group will begin with an overview of the EV3 programming environment, then work on the basics of getting robots to navigate on a competition field. Common sensors for detecting lines, borders, and colors will be introduced. Finally, the use of “My Blocks” to build custom routines will be covered.

September 15th — SESSIONS ARE FULL

Participants will gain hands-on experience creating attachments and other chassis improvements to solve common FLL game challenges. The workshop will then focus on intermediate programming topics, including My Blocks, loop and sensor blocks, and navigation using the gyro and color sensors.

Afternoon (1pm-4pm): Intermediate FLL Programming 2; Season and Tournament Preparation
This session will continue with intermediate programming tasks using sensors and navigation, followed by a review of tournament activities and tips for improving team success in the Robot Design, Project, and Core Values aspects of the competition.

2016-2017 League Play FAQ

Overview of this document

This page attempts to document what is known (and not known) about League Play in the North Texas FTC Region for the 2016-2017 season.  This page is not an official document; the statements below are simply citations and analysis I’ve obtained from various sources.

Draft league assignments went out to many coaches on September 30.  Coaches in each draft league are to coordinate with each other and Dr. Tiernan at UT-Arlington to determine locations and dates for holding at least three league meets and a League Tournament.

I’m currently aware of five leagues being worked on in North Texas:  Amethyst, Emerald, Garnet, Sapphire, and Topaz.  If you know of other draft leagues, please let me know so I can add them to my list.

The main source of information regarding league play comes from the 2016-2017 FTC League Meet Guide (LMG), available from http://www.firstinspires.org/resource-library/ftc/volunteer-resources .

On October 12th we held a League Play Webinar and the slides from that webinar are available.

Patrick Michaud (Pm) is the primary maintainer for this page.  If you have further questions, suggestions, additions, corrections, or alterations for this page, please send them to pmichaud@pobox.com or post them to the NorthTexasFTC Google Group. (more…)
